The PS/IS 217 Middle School: A Big City School with a Small Town Feel!
Small Class sizes with low student-teacher-ratios.
Our small class sizes allow the teachers to get know students on a deeply personal level. In addition, subject area teachers follow the same group of students through sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, which provides the students with the opportunity to interact with teachers academically and socially throughout their entire middle school career.
Pre-K through Eighth Grade means easy transition into middle school
Our families appreciate the small community feel in our building and the support they receive during their child’s transition from elementary school to middle school. Middle school students frequently have the opportunity to build confidence and a sense of responsibility by contributing throughout the school whether it be reading a book to a 1st grade class, helping make loud-speaker announcements, or volunteering at PTA and school events.
Rigorous Academic Curriculum
Our rigorous academic curriculum covers the core subjects: English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math. In addition, a wide array of opportunities for students are offered to explore their non-academic interests during the school day. For example, we offer computers, STEM with the Salvadori Center, music theory, band, tennis, and theater. Middle school clubs offer students the opportunity to try their hands at a variety of different subjects such as photography, environmentalism and forensic science.
Additionally, after-school academic enrichment is provided at certain points throughout the year in preparation for state exams and Regents testing.
Beautiful, Inspiring Facilities
We have a modern building that is open, clean, bright, and offers a beautiful water view, as well as a view of Manhattan. Our hallways are lined with flags representing the countries of our many international students and families.
Our state-ofthe-art facilities offer updated computer labs, ActiveBoards in every classroom, a full Library, gymnasium, outdoor recreational area and a weight room. Currently a Green Roof is being planned and will soon be an amazing addition to our school.
Partnership with Cornell Tech
Our school has recently been adopted by the newly opened Cornell Tech on Roosevelt Island. Middle school students benefit greatly from this partnership with tours, field trips, hackathons, coding classes and frequent learning activities with Cornell Tech teachers and graduate students.
