Imagine 6,750 square feet of under utilized riverfront roof that can be transformed into a Green STEM learning hub with views of Manhattan. 217 Administration and PTA have been working on bringing this vision to 217 for years. In 2013 Principal Beckman applied to the Borough President for a PS/IS 217 green roof School Construction Authority (SCA) feasibility study which reported the roof was feasible. Because school green roofs are large scale, multi-year, high cost legacy projects, the SCA allows for them to be funded over a span of two budget years, and often the Borough President and City Council work together to cover costs. SCA says school green roofs average 1.2M to 1.5M. Last month Principal Mandana Beckman requested 1.5M to fund this project from the Borough President's capital.
Another important source of funding is the Participatory Budget process run through the office of City Council member Ben Kallos where communities can vote on projects important to them. It takes months of work to determine if a project is eligible to be on the ballot. 217 Green Roof project is now officially on 2015 Participatory Budget ballot, spread the word and help us get enough votes so we can secure these funds from City Council!
