Ms. O'Connor teaches the 3rd Grade G+T class.
Question 1: What's your favorite thing about P.S/I.S 217?
Some of my favorite things about P.S/I.S 217 are just the interaction with the kids and the community among the teachers. I love that not only do I get to teach the students educational stuff, but life skills. I get to be there when they lose a tooth, get into an argument with a friend, have a crush, I see the good and the bad. These are wonderful moments for me because I get to watch them grow into these little people and guide them along this journey called life. It's an incredible honor indeed especially when I get to do it with wonderful teachers who help me grow into a better teacher and person.
Question 2: If you could trade jobs with someone else for one day, what job would you choose and why?
One of my students had asked me this question a few weeks ago, and it puzzled me. I couldn't think of anything I rather be doing, I couldn't think of anything that seemed more fitting for myself and where I could make a bigger difference than I do now. Of course there are things that I love to do such as dancing, however my biggest dream was to make a difference in the world, and just help everyone that I come in contact with. This dream doesn't necessarily have to be found within a career, but in the way I live my life. I may not see the difference I make in my students lives immediately, but I must hope that when they do get older that they'll remember me and all that I taught them. My job is tough at times, but the way that I look at it is if you truly are passionate about what you do and who you do it for then of course you'll have ups and downs. That's why it makes it all worth it in the end, because I get to see that light bulb appear when a student understands a concept after struggling all year, learns to be considerate of others or ends up loving to read and going to school.
Question 3: If you could get every student in your class to do one thing, every day, what would it be?
Gosh, one thing that I would love for each of my students in my class to do every day would try to be selfless. I would want my students to understand the importance of being kind and compassionate. These are so important to me because I know that every little bit does make a difference, and I want my students to feel as if they are important in changing the world, because they are just by being themselves.
Question 4: How do you get to work each day?
I am not typically a morning person so I do hit my snooze button a lot! However, when I am up I get ready quick and leave my apartment. I take the 7 train to Roosevelt Avenue, and transfer to the F and take that to Roosevelt Island. If the red bus or the city bus is there I will hop on that, but most days I like to walk from the train station to school. I love feeling the breeze, looking at the sky, and just being surrounded by nature. This quiet time is quite relaxing and it really preps me for the day to come.
Question 5: What is your favorite event at P.S/I.S 217?
I absolutely love spirit week. Spirit week has always been my favorite growing up as a kid, or even in college. There's something about being united with everyone else that brings the community together. Everyone has the same goal and the energy is amazing. You get to see a different side of people where there is no stress, but everyone is just having fun. You get to see different people's personalities come out through their versions of each theme. I simply love dressing up and just being silly.
