Our Hawks are united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. We choose kindness.
The MakerSpace is back up and running on the 217 playground! Every second week, 217 students enjoy the opportunity to get creative and explore making with different materials and techniques.
With the help of Cornell Tech’s Niti Parikh, our MakerSpace Co-ordinator, along with Cornell Tech students and members of the Teacher Support Team, students are encouraged to design and experiment as they engage in building, inventing, and learning basic engineering concepts. Our young Hawks are looking to break records during the next 3-4 weeks of our Fitnessgram Testing. The NYC Fitnessgram is an annual fitness assessment aimed at helping students develop goals for lifelong fitness and good health. The test consists of a pacer run, push-ups, sit-ups and flexibility in the lower back. Our 4th grade students were all smiles during their 1st year completing the Fitnessgram Assessment, while 3rd graders get a taste of the Fitnessgram Assessment in preparation for their 4th grade test next year.

For assistance or questions please contact Susy: susy.delcampop@gmail.com The Book of the Month tradition continues at 217! Coinciding with Unity Day, and supporting our PBIS character trait of the month - Cooperation - this month's book, Enemy Pie focuses on how perceiving people based on a single impression can often be misleading. In the book, the main character claims that Jeremy Ross is his enemy and doesn’t invite him to his birthday party, because Jeremy had laughed at him when he struck him out in a baseball game. The main character’s dad convinces him that, in order to get rid of his enemy he just needs to make an enemy pie and share it with Jeremy. While hanging out and sharing the ‘enemy pie’ (which is really a delicious pie), they bond and become friends. After reading Enemy Pie, classes discuss the moral of the story - how first impressions aren’t always correct and not to judge someone based on first appearances. PS/IS 217 Middle School students visited Cornell Tech today for the 4th Annual Let's Code Roosevelt Island! Over sixty Cornell Tech graduate students were there to work with them as they learn to use Javascript to edit news videos they recorded.

The campaign, held during the month of October, unites communities around the world to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. A signature event during the month is Unity Day - on October 25 - when everyone is encouraged to wear and share the color ORANGE. Unity Day is a time for everyone to come together – in schools, in communities, and online – and send one large ORANGE message of support, hope, and unity to show that we are together against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. ![]() In November, parents and guardians of our students are invited to classrooms to see student learning in action!
