BACK TO SCHOOL INFORMATION!

9/1/2019

Welcome back PS/IS 217 Families, and a special welcome to families new to our school!  We are excited to have you join us for another school year!
There is a lot to take in - Please carefully read the information below to ensure a smooth start to the year!

Class Assignments: Your child’s class assignment was posted by mail last week and should be arriving soon!

School Opening Times:
  • 7:45am: School opens for Breakfast club. PreK students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who must remain with the child until arrival at 8:25. All other parents must say goodbye at the main door.
  • 8:20am: Side door (closer to Gristedes) open for grades 4 - 8, students report directly to classrooms - NOT the auditorium as class assignment letters stated (room details below).
  • 8:22am: Main entrance doors open for PreK - 3, students report directly to their classrooms.
  • 8:25am: Classes begin.
  • Students arriving via school buses must arrive prior to 8:15am and will be escorted to the cafeteria by the drivers.

School Dismissal :
Blue Emergency Cards will be sent home on the first day of school. All dismissal information MUST be listed. * This includes after-school care (Beacon, Island Kids, Youth Center), school bus, or siblings (4th grade or older). If you allow your child to self-dismiss and walk home unaccompanied (grades 3-8 only), your teacher AND the Main Office must be informed in writing.

All Classes are dismissed at 2.45pm
  • Pre-K:    Your Class Assignment letter will provide details regarding dismissal times during the first two days of school. Beginning Tuesday, Sept 10th, parents must use the school yard gate to pick up their child from classrooms at 2:45pm.
  • Kindergarten-Grade 3: Classes will be dismissed from the enclosed school yard.
  • Grades 4-8: Students will be dismissed from the side door (closer to Gristedes).
  • Students taking a school bus will be met inside and collected by bus drivers.

The First Day of School: September 5th

Staff strive to give our students the opportunity to practice independence and maintain a safe
environment. A prolonged goodbye can make the separation and transition to the school day more difficult. Rest assured that many staff members are stationed around the building to ensure that students get to classrooms and to assist as needed.

Pre-Kindergarten: The first day of Pre-K is split into two sessions. Your Class Assignment letter mailed by post last week will provide more information specific to your child. The second day is a half day with dismissal from the classrooms at 11:29am. The first full day for Pre-K students is Monday, September 9th. Parents may escort children to their classroom each morning.

Kindergarten: You will be permitted to escort your child to his/her classroom on the first few days of school. Beginning Tuesday September 10th, you must say goodbye to your child prior to them entering the school building.

Grades 1-3: You will be permitted to escort your child to his/her classroom on the first two days of school. Beginning Monday September 9th, you must say goodbye to your child prior to them entering the school building.

Grades 4-8: Students should report directly to their first period classrooms - NOT the auditorium as reported in letters sent home. Parents may accompany their child to their classroom, but will not be permitted to stay.

PTA and School Communications:
The PTA serves as an important source of information and reminders about events, news, last-minute announcements, and programs.
So that we can create an accurate 2019-2020 mailing list, we ask that ALL families, old and new, fill out the Online Family Info Form (one per family).
  • Our School newsletter, Hawks Happenings, is emailed to parents weekly. It lists current/future school events and important information about 217. Please fill out the Online Family Info Form using the above link to ensure you are added to the list.
  • Paper Notices are frequently sent home in student backpacks - be sure to check regularly!
  • Follow us on our PS/IS 217 PTA FACEBOOK page.
  • Visit our WEBSITE!
  • The PS/IS 217 school calendar is updated regularly and can be viewed HERE. Using the Google Calendar app, the calendar can be available from your phone, tablet or computer!

School Supplies: School Supply Lists can be found HERE.
  • If you pre-ordered supplies from the PTA in June, the supply kit has been delivered directly to your child’s classroom for teachers to unpack and stock their classrooms.
  • If you missed the June deadline, please bring your child’s supplies to school during the first week.

PTA General Fund Drive:
As a PS/IS 217 parent, you are automatically part of the PTA. There are no fees and no special membership forms to complete… and ALL members have a voice and voting rights.

The PTA helps provide resources and funding that support teacher professional development,  classroom/school supplies, furniture, and equipment whenever we can.  Additionally, the PTA funds all the in-class enrichment programs offered at PS/IS 217, including art programs, a variety of dance & music classes, and cultural learning and appreciation activities.

Our suggested donation is $600 per child, but our ultimate goal is 100% participation, with every family donating what they are able. We respect that every family’s circumstances are different. Together we can ensure another year of support and funding for our school.
Please make your annual contribution today either via the 217 PTA website or by sending in an envelope labeled General Fund with cash or a check, in your child’s backpack.
