This past Wednesday, the 8th grade class was lucky enough to attend WE Day - an annual celebration that brings together over 200,000 people across Canada, the US and the UK, and features an amazing lineup of world-renowned speakers and performers. This years line-up included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Martin Luther King III, Yuan Manuel Santos, Nas, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among many, many others. The WE movement is all about young people learning to develop good citizenship skills, and enabling and empowering them to take action and be change-makers both locally and globally - we are sure that our 8th grade class left WE Day full of inspiration to make a positive impact and make a difference! Teachers have requested that all Grades 4-8 students have a planner ready to use by October 1st! If you still don't have one, there is still time to purchase the PS/IS 217 2018-19 Planner.

School Opening Times (including the first day)
School Dismissal All dismissal information MUST be listed on emergency contact Blue Cards. This includes after-school care (Beacon, Island Kids, Youth Center), school bus, or siblings (4th grade or older). All Classes are dismissed at 2:45pm PreK: Your Class Assignment letter from school included details regarding dismissal times during the first two days of school. Beginning Friday the 7th, parents must use the school yard gate to pick up their child from classrooms at 2:45pm. Kindergarten-Grade 3: Classes will be dismissed from the enclosed school yard. (Kindergarten classes will be dismissed from their classroom at 11:29am on the first day of school). Grades 4-8: Students will be dismissed from the side door (closer to Gristedes). Students taking a school bus will be met inside by bus drivers and accompanied to their bus. ![]() The First Day of School: September 5 After dropping your child off, parents are welcome to join us at 9am in the Cafeteria for the PTA Welcome-to-School Breakfast with coffee and refreshments. PTA General Fund Drive As a PS/IS 217 parent, you are automatically part of the PTA. There are no fees and no special membership forms to complete… and ALL members have a voice and voting rights. The PTA helps provide resources and funding that support teacher professional development, supplies, furniture, and equipment to classrooms and school facilities whenever we can. Additionally, the PTA funds all the in-class enrichment programs offered at PS/IS 217, including art programs, a variety of dance classes, and cultural learning and appreciation activities. Our suggested donation is $600 per child, but our ultimate goal is 100% participation,**with every family donating what they are able. We respect that every family’s circumstances are different. Together we can ensure another year of support and funding for our school.
