8th Grade attends WE Day!

This past Wednesday, the 8th grade class was lucky enough to attend WE Day - an annual celebration that brings together over 200,000 people across Canada, the US and the UK, and features an amazing lineup of world-renowned speakers and performers.  This years line-up included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Martin Luther King III, Yuan Manuel Santos, Nas, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among many, many others.

The WE movement is all about young people learning to develop good citizenship skills, and enabling and empowering them to take action and be change-makers both locally and globally - we are sure that our 8th grade class left WE Day full of inspiration to make a positive impact and make a difference!

Teachers have requested that all Grades 4-8 students have a planner ready to use by October 1st!  If you still don't have one, there is still time to purchase the PS/IS 217 2018-19 Planner.

From October 1st we are opening Planner sales to ALL grades while supplies last! Order Now!!!

If you would like to purchase one, please send in an envelope:
  • Labelled: "217 Planner" with your child's full name and class number
  • with $7 (correct cash only please - we don't keep change at school!)

Once ordered, please allow 1-3 days for orders to be delivered to classroom teachers.

Grades 4-8: School Agendas

Learning to be organized is a process - a skill that needs to be taught, practiced, and honed. Teachers will be reinforcing these skills with their students throughout the year and request that all students have a planner ready to use by October 1st.

Families can purchase the 217 school agenda by returning the form below with $7 cash (correct amounts only) or a check payable to PS/IS 217 PTA.

Note: If you ordered the school supply kit last June, your child has already received a 217 agenda and bag tag as part of their kit.

Beacon Update: Start Date and Mandatory Parent Orientations

Beacon After-school Stard Date - Sept 12th:

The first day of Beacon will be next Wednesday, Sept 12th, starting at 2:45PM. Students will be picked up by our group leaders from their teachers.

****IMPORTANT: All families MUST put Beacon on the students’ blue card in order to for teachers to allow group leaders to pick them up. Fill it out as: Beacon, 718-577-5751
 
Mandatory Parent Orientation:

Parent Orientations will also be held Wednesday ,Sept 12th at the following times: 
 
  • Grades K-2: 5:30PM-6:30PM
  • Grades 3-MS: 6:30PM-7:30PM
 
Attending parent orientation is required to confirm your child's after-school spot.

Important First Week Information!

Welcome back PS/IS 217 Families, and a special welcome to families new to our school! We are excited to have you joining us for the start of the school year! 

Please read the following information carefully - it is long, but important!

Classroom Assignments
Your child’s class assignment were posted by mail last week and should be arriving soon!

School Opening Times (including the first day)

  • The PS/IS 217 school building opens at 7:45am for Breakfast Club. All students are welcome and breakfast is free (please note: several staff supervisors are present each day. Parents are not permitted -- with the exception of Pre-K students, who MUST be accompanied by an adult).  Please contact lrademaker@schools.nyc.gov with any questions.
  • Classes begin promptly at 8:25am. Doors will be opened a few minutes earlier and students should report directly to their classrooms.
  • Pre-K-Grade 3 should use the main entrance. 
  • Grades 4-8 should use the side entrance door (closer to Gristedes).
  • Students arriving via school buses must arrive prior to 8:15am and will be escorted to the Cafeteria by drivers.

School Dismissal

​All dismissal information MUST be listed on emergency contact Blue Cards. This includes after-school care (Beacon, Island Kids, Youth Center), school bus, or siblings (4th grade or older).

All Classes are dismissed at 2:45pm

PreK: Your Class Assignment letter from school included details regarding dismissal times during the first two days of school. Beginning Friday the 7th, parents must use the school yard gate to pick up their child from classrooms at 2:45pm.

Kindergarten-Grade 3: Classes will be dismissed from the enclosed school yard. (Kindergarten classes will be dismissed from their classroom at 11:29am on the first day of school).

Grades 4-8: Students will be dismissed from the side door (closer to Gristedes).
Students taking a school bus will be met inside by bus drivers and accompanied to their bus.

​The First Day of School: September 5

After dropping your child off, parents are welcome to join us at 9am in the Cafeteria for the PTA Welcome-to-School Breakfast with coffee and refreshments.

Pre-Kindergarten: The first day of Pre-K is split into two sessions. Your Class Assignment letter mailed by post last week will provide more information specific to your child. The second day is a half day with dismissal from classrooms at 11:29am. The first full day for Pre-K students is Friday, September 7th. Parents may escort children to their classroom each morning.

Kindergarten: You can escort your children to their classrooms on the first few days of school. Beginning Wednesday September 12th, you must say goodbye to your children before they enter the school building. We want to teach our students independence and maintain a safe environment. A prolonged goodbye makes the separation and transition to the school day more difficult. Many staff members are stationed around the building to ensure students get to classrooms, and they will assist as needed.

The first day of Kindergarten is a half day. You may walk your children to their classrooms and then join the PTA in the Cafeteria for Welcome to School refreshments. On the first day, kindergarteners will be dismissed from their classrooms at 11:29am. The first full day of school for Kindergarten is Thursday, September 6th.

PTA and School Communications

The PTA serves as an important source of information and reminders about events, news, last-minute announcements, and programs.

So that we can create an accurate 2018-19 mailing list, we ask that ALL families, old and new, fill out the online PTA Info Form (one per family):

  • Our School newsletter, Hawks' Happenings, is emailed to parents weekly. It lists current/future school events and important information about 217. Please fill out the PTA form using the above link to ensure you are added to the list.
  • Notices are frequently sent home in students' backpacks -- be sure to check regularly! 
  • Follow us on our PS/IS 217 PTA FACEBOOK page.
  • Visit our WEBSITE! 
  • The full year calendar will be sent home the first week of school in your child’s backpack. The PS/IS 217 school calendar can be viewed HERE. Using the Google Calendar app, the calendar can be available from your phone, tablet or computer!


School Supplies

  • School Supply Lists can be found HERE. 
  • If you pre-ordered supplies from the PTA in June, the supply kit will be delivered directly to your child’s classroom with your child’s name on it for teachers to unpack and stock their classrooms.
  • If you missed the June deadline, please bring your child’s supplies to school during the first week. Remember to use the PS/IS 217 Amazon link – Amazon donates between 3-7% of your purchase amount to the PTA!  (Please note that this program works in addition to Amazon Prime and can be used when you make any Amazon purchases, but you must use the link on the PTA website).

PTA General Fund Drive

​As a PS/IS 217 parent, you are automatically part of the PTA. There are no fees and no special membership forms to complete… and ALL members have a voice and voting rights.
The PTA helps provide resources and funding that support teacher professional development, supplies, furniture, and equipment to classrooms and school facilities whenever we can.

Additionally, the PTA funds all the in-class enrichment programs offered at PS/IS 217, including art programs, a variety of dance classes, and cultural learning and appreciation activities.


Our suggested donation is $600 per child, but our ultimate goal is 100% participation,**with every family donating what they are able. We respect that every family’s circumstances are different. 

Together we can ensure another year of support and funding for our school.


Please consider making your annual contribution today either via the 217 PTA website or by sending in a envelope labeled General Fund with cash or a check, in your child’s backpack.​
