It was the perfect weather for the 2nd grade field trip to Roosevelt Island's Four Freedoms Park. With the Manhattan skyline providing a stunning backdrop, students enjoyed walking to the southorn tip of the Islance to visit the Memorial to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During their trip they learned about President Roosevelt and the Four Freedoms (freedom of speech & expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear), discussed the importance of distinguishing between wants and needs, and brainstormed how they could act to give back to their community.
Not bad for a mornings work! On Wednesday Morning, the 4th grade classes demonstrated their small group skits that they had planned and written themselves, along with some really polished class musical performances. It was a real pleasure to see the students participating so enthusiastically in this terrific residency sponsored by the PTA - well done 4th Grade!! We are so fortunate to have one of the newest, most innovative centers for technichal knowledge and learning, Cornell Tech, as one of our neighbors here on Roosevelt Island. The expertise and skills they've imparted throughout the entire school, among all teachers and students over the past 4 years, is truly amazing! As the year comes to an end, what better way to end the school year than with a book that teaches us how to deal with our problems however big or small?
What do you do with a problem? by Kobi Yamada is relevant to any age group and teaches its reader to take the opportunity to face their problems. Sometimes, problems that we thought were so big are actually not that big at all once you find the courage to face them. This book inspires you to look closely at your problems and to learn important lessons as you tackle them. We may even learn something new as we tackle them and uncover some insight as to why they happened in the first place. Problems will always be part of our lives. They shape who we are, they are the bumps in our roads, they are the challenges that help discover how strong and brave we really are. Thanks also to Principal for the Day Mr Ahmed and Assistant-Principal for the Day Mr Streich for helping read the Book of the Month to classes! Field Day began with some glorious weather and a huge amount of enthusiasm as 4th and 5th Grades took part in Field Day! The Tug O' War was fierce! The winners took on the teachers in a hot battle! Cooling off with a water balloon fight to finish up a terrific day! Parents, relatives, and family friends were thoroughly entertained tonight by the music performances from Grades 2-8! Students really shone in their performances - the culmination of a years hard work in music classes. Grade 2 students gave their best choral performance, Grade 3 harmonized on the recorder, and Grades 4-8 gave some terrific band performances. Congratulations to our students on a job well done, and a big thank you to Mr Ladalia and our teachers for putting on such a tremendous show! If you would like to share your photos, please email them to psis217info@gmail.com. Summer vacation is the perfect time to reinforce reading skills that your child has learned throughout the school year!

Parents and family members from over 27 counties and regions put in an incredible effort and fed a huge crowd their tempting traditional foods. No-one left hungry, that's for sure! And while they were munching, guests were treated to some beautiful henna tattoo's, the art of chinese tea and calligraphy, a Japanese yosakoi dance, flag making, and participated in a number of different games from countries around the world! It was a brilliant afternoon, and we would like to thank our event Sponsor, AMALGAMATED BANK, along with Wengerd Farms, Piccolo Trattoria, Gristedes, and Emmi Roth who all donated goods to the event. And of course, the amazingly talented Cooks, and the numerous volunteers, helpers, and families who made this event a magnificent experience! Thank you!
