Book of the Month continues at 217 with My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook. While reading this book students thought about self control. Have you ever had a feeling that you may erupt? Or the feeling of a rumble, grumble in your tummy or a jiggle or wiggle coming out of your body? If so, then you can relate to the main character Louis who struggles with self control. Told from Louis’ perspective this story provided a wonderful opportunity to teach the value of respecting others by listening and waiting for their turn to speak. Please continue the conversation about Self-Control at home! College Awareness Day aims to help students and families understand that their dream of college is attainable. Over the day teachers engaged in conversations and activities with students with the aim of inspiring their college aspirations! Here are some photos of students throughout the day: Recently, classes 401, 402, 405 and 501 participated in a workshop presented by the New York City Children's Theater called "Fair and Square".
Fair and Square is all about conflict among 5th grade friends and the appropriate ways to handle these types of conflicts. After losing the school spelling bee to Roberta another student, McKayla. accuses her of cheating. When Roberta learns that she might lose her coveted award she takes matters into her own hands, placing the two of them in serious trouble. Throughout the interactive drama and workshop, students explored themes of conflict management, actions, and consequences as well as peer pressure. The students were highly involved and added wonderful insight and their own resolutions for the actors. If your child would like to participate in the Talent show they can sign-up now! Space is limited and only complete applications will be considered.
We also need parents who can who can help us ensure that this event runs smoothly and the kids have fun! Please contact us if you can help! ![]() Hair Fairies conducted a school-wide lice check today, following their lice education presentation at this morning’s PTA meeting. All students and teachers were checked. Hair Fairies detected at least one child with nits from lice in 18 out of 25 classes checked. Although this is hard news to hear, knowledge is power. As a community, we all need to work together to detect and eradicate lice at 217. The DOE provides information about lice, and how to treat and prevent lice here http://schools.nyc.gov/offices/health/pediculosis/default.htm What can I do if my child has lice or nits? There are many services that will help you get rid of lice, or you can treat lice at home. Click here to view guidance from the NYC DOE or Hair Fairies also has education materials on their website, including videos on how to detect and treat lice, available at: https://www.hairfairies.com/lice-treatment-videos/ What can I do to check my child and/or prevent lice if someone in my child’s class has lice? Even if your child was not found to have lice or nits during today’s screening, if your child is in a class where lice was detected, a preventative wet comb-out is helpful! Please see the guidance from the NYC DOE . There are also many online resources that can help you become more educated about lice and how to detect it, treat it, and take steps to prevent it. ![]()
